Since it was recently announced that Japan won the bid for the 2020 Olympic Games, Zaha Hadid came up with an ingenious plan for a retrofit of the National Stadium into a more modern and eco-friendly design which would become the new Tokyo National Olympic Stadium.

The new project offers a central structure which is quite different from the original one aiming to create calm and relaxing setting rather than the usual stadium look especially since it has a lot of sustainable features such as grey water reuse.

The stadium incorporates geothermal heat and a rainwater cooling system but it also presents a dynamic design that was already appreciated by the Sport Council judges since it is very appropriate for the sporting activities. The design tries to create a setting which can support various functions with a sliding roof that gives room for open-air concerts and a towering arch.

The project is in competition with ten other architecture firms and it is still undecided which of them will see their design built.
