The Valdespartera Kindergarten located in Zaragoza, Spain was designed in 2013 by the practice of Magen Arquitectos to provide an education facility to the new Ecocity which has 10000 housing units with eco-friendly features.
The kindergarten is to the southern edge of the new district close to the ring highway and to the water tanks, so the designers opted for a round aesthetic which would suit the surrounding urban landscape. The teaching areas are to the south while the classrooms go into the hillside so that only the north side provides access to the site which is also the lowest point of the project.
The nine classrooms and the dining room are on the bottom floor to be closer to the entrance, while the upper floor hosts the Primary Education Center and sports courts. The playground is opened from above and has an oval shape which defines the inner, protected unit as an independent program from outside, contrasting the residential volumes in the vicinity.
