The Panoramarestaurant Karren is a restaurant extension designed by the practice of Ruf Stasi Partner Architekten over the edge of the Karren Mountain in the Austrian Alps.
The project features steel and glass as the predominant materials to allow a stunning panorama of the surroundings from the hollow structure which expands the dining room size. The new restaurant has long steel columns which were rooted into the mountain to keep it in place and they are linked to the main building through a glass passageway.
The remote location of the project determined the designers to create a place which inspires calm and serenity while creating “a more holistic appearance for the Karren cable-car station” and since it sits at 956 meters above sea level it offers views of Lake Constance and the Rhine Valley.
The former building was also renovated with parts of the timber structure and steel parts being prefabricated and brought by helicopter on site.
