The practice of Ricardo Carvalho + Joana Vilhena Arquitectos transformed the beautiful Casa da Calcada, which is one of the most impressive homes in the region with an aesthetic inspired from the 16th century scholar architecture, into hotel rooms.
The Casa is located in the vineyard village of Provezende in the Douro region of Portugal and it has a symmetric displacement that defines the street with the aid of a chapel and small square. The property used to host several acres of vineyard and a few small buildings were constructed to aid in the production of wine which were abandoned after a while.
The small buildings are made of stone and placed around a patio close to the main home, so the designers had to transform them into hotel rooms without adding any new constructions. The idea was to take advantage of the beautiful aesthetic qualities of the old ruins and bring their interiors up to date with new materials while also adding a swimming pool into the main ruin.
