The Yu Bar located at the Marriott Hotel in Shanghai, China was designed in 2011 by the Kokaistudios architectural practice and it overlooks the Expo 2010 site and the Lupu River from the terrace at the 28th and 29th floor.
The project was developed by the Greenland Group and is managed by the Marriott Group as a multifunctional venue that is appropriate for hosting a large array of events. Since the project is spread over two levels, the designers gave a different ambiance to each of them.
Yu is a Chinese character symbolizing elegance and thus the design combines traditional Chinese features with the western exclusivity to create a contemporary space with sleek wood blocks and a stainless steel ceiling.
The entrance into the bar is surrounded by dark glass cabinets which are combined with dramatic illumination to create a powerful impact. The VIP section overlooks the entire space and is furnished with old style chesterfield sofas covered in red leather and centered on a stainless steel globe.
