The Yin-Yang House is a project designed by the architectural practice of Brooks + Scarpa in 2011 and it is located in Venice, California, USA.
The project aimed to create a comfortable home for a growing family and a space that focuses on the public family areas as an entertaining space. Organized around a series of courtyards, the outdoor space is integrated with the interior through sliding glass doors and although the street side is hidden behind a steel entrance the back of the house is truly open to offer a close connection with the natural environment.
The easy link between the back yard and the living area makes this space quite suitable for a large gathering and the terrace also hosts a swimming pool for the warm days. The central area of the house is the kitchen with an open working area and the bedrooms are designed to cover just the amount of space needed, allowing the public areas to be larger.
The materials used in the building include bamboo, composite stone, tile countertops and recycled finishes to give the house an eco-friendly feature. There is also a green roof, radiant heating and photovoltaic panels that make the house truly sustainable.
