The Architectural Folie of the 21st Century is a competition organized by the Montpellier city in the Southern region of France and it was won by collaboration between the Sou Fujimoto Architects studio from Japan and the Nicolas Laisine Associes and Manal Archdi Oxo Architects practices from France with a project entitled Arbre Blanc.

The White Tree is an apartment building spreading over 17 floors hosting 120 apartments and a rooftop penthouse with panoramic views of the Pyrenees Mountains and of the Mediterranean Sea. Aside from residential suites, the project also contains an art gallery, offices, a bar and a restaurant.

The designers follow the tradition of outdoor living in Montpellier and the tower is between the city center and the new districts of Port Marianne and Odysseum so the façade has curves along the eastern edge and a convex western side to allow the widest panorama without blocking the view or the other nearby residences.
