The Spira Performing Arts Center is located on an artificial peninsula on Lake Munksjon in the center of downtown Jonkoping, Sweden and it was designed by the architectural practice of Wingardh Arkitektkontor through an invited competition in which they won the first prize.
The project includes four performing arts venues: the main concert hall with seats for 910 persons, a 450 seat theater, a black box with 200 seats and a café stage with 200 seats. The four halls are reached through a foyer which opens to the west and links them together, while the east side hosts the workshops for the everyday activities and an extra public building which is planned to be built in the future.
The interior of the project is finished in warm wood and the concert hall is wrapped in wood and features the starry sky. The elevations are vertically stripped and have white, yellow, transparent and orange bands of glass to hint at the color which molten glass has when it leaves the furnace as a remembrance of the glassmaking tradition in the region.
