The Shang Xia flagship store located on the historic 6th arrondissement of Paris, France was designed by the Kengo Kuma architectural practice with a combination of traditional Chinese and contemporary Parisian aesthetics.
The interior has the walls clad in white ceramic panels and there are 6000 wafer thin pieces on the ceiling to cover the entire area of the store which spreads over a surface of 134 square meters. Each wafer has the dimension of 40mm x 150mm.
The impressive coating acts as a reference to the importance of the material in Asia and it also creates a bright ambiance reminiscent of the pointillist artworks of the French painters such as Seurat.
The space gains an ethereal feeling resembling the clouds and this motif is continued on the façade located on the Rue de Sevres on a corner plot. The bright white palette makes the flagship store stand out even more during the nighttime.
