The PortMiami Tunnel opened on 3rd of August 2014 to complete a one billion dollar project of infrastructure that was thirty years in the making with the aid of an international architecture team in which the ArquitectonicaGEO practice based in Miami was a member.

The project has two tunnels underneath the Government Cut shipping channel with a length of 4200 feet that connect the PortMiami on Dodge Island to the I-395 through the MacArthur Causeway as well as adding 362 feet of depressed roadway on the Island and an approach road of over a mile in length on Watson and Dodge.

The portals are sculptural and the tunnels have a diameter of 43 feet, raising the infrastructure to a form of art. The tunnel entrances have 50 ton flood gates to protect the tunnels in case of hurricane storm surges and the words on the concrete surfaces are conjugations of the Latin word for “navigate” to add some texture to the structure and thus moderate its scale.
