After we were amazed by the wonderfully original approach taken by the practice of Coll-Barreu Arquitectos in their design of the Textured Tower, they continue to impress with the sculptural Policemen House located in Bilbao, Biscay, Spain.
The central Public Safety services located in this building serve a million people and the site where it sits was unstable so the structure raises over an open mine with pits of 50 meters in depth to host the caverns of the project.
There are several concatenated planes defining the exterior and they stand out from afar while integrating into the steep topography with efficiency. The folded aluminum sheets stand in the air and the system of layers adds a dynamic element to the exterior.
A system of layers stimulates the structure with paper as the main material, a choice which the designers found suitable since it represents the social contract and the ephemeral quality of our status quo: “Our buildings are paper, as they are our security, our convictions, our society: uncertain, temporary, fleeting”.
