The practice of Arkitektgruppen Cubus AS & Ramboll Norge rehabilitated a run-down local school called the Ny-Krohnborg school and nursery in Bergen, Norway.
The nursery has a central location in the Lovstakksiden neighborhood and is close to the renewal of the seafront site with a lot of housing areas along with easy access via tramway or bus. The school is between two streets on an inclined space so that the school yard had to be excavated in order to create sufficient space for the new sports hall, stage and musical facilities along with the café.
The fact that the existing school was a listed building made matters even more difficult since the heritage office had to be involved to ensure the preservation of some elements such as the external facades, the natural stone work, slate roof tiles, small pane windows and paneled doors.
The reuse of the existing building made the construction process more sustainable and it created a synergy between the new sports and culture facilities that would otherwise have been left out.
