Taking its name from a famous 1970s song by Jean Knight, the Mr Big Stuff restaurant and bar is a project located in Meyers Place, Melbourne, Australia which was created in 2014 by the practice of Techne Architecture + Interior Design.

Spreading over a surface of 110 square meters, the song gives the inspiration for the entire project, defining its food and the design of the interior, trying to create the perfect setting for Southern American soul food, a concept which was missing from the Melbourne market.

The design is inspired by the American music and its films, taking elements from funk and old hip-hop which was portrayed in a contemporary manner. The limited natural light challenged the designers to find other ways of expanding the sense of space, so the attention was focused on the patron areas where the 53 seats give an intimate ambiance.

The DJ and music components bring extra flavor to the dining and bar experience and the Can I Play graphic design studio created several triangular fins that display various icons from the African American culture.
