Kindergarten In Jiading New Town by Atelier Deshaus

Located in the new town of Jiading in the northern suburb of Shanghai, this kindergarten is placed in a problematic surrounding that is in-between the usual dichotomy of urban and countryside, and due to this uncertainty it becomes difficult to make it blend in since the environment near it is opened.

Spreading over an area of 6600 square meters, the architects at Atelier Deshaus separated the space into two main parts, one being the rational and efficient area composed of 15 classrooms and several playrooms, and the other one being the enlarged transportation space designed as an atrium with ramp ways that link the different floors. The latter area was intentionally designed as a vague space to permit it to have different uses.

The exterior façade reveals the open activity space through the changed elevation places and the varying size and color of the windows, and the courtyard spreads in a vertical rather than a horizontal direction.
