The (fer ) studio remodeled and extended the Kim Residence in California adding 900 square feet to the existing three bedroom and three bathroom ranch-style home built in the 1950s.
The purpose of the project was to bring the single floor home to contemporary standards and to expand the living room and kitchen while also adding a bedroom and improving the connection with the landscape accentuating the beautiful natural surroundings.
The home is barely visible from the street and it blends into the La Canada foothills on a slope below the road surrounded by native oaks and redwoods. The roof is made of gray metal to add a defining element to the home and to add a textural contrast to the cedar exterior sides.
The common areas of the house were arranged along the main north-south axis beginning with the foyer and leading to the dining area which has a dramatic fold in the ceiling and overlooks the front area while also giving access to the living area and the rest of the programs.
