The NRG Energy, Inc., company in collaboration with Google and BrightSource Energy created the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System which is the largest concentrating solar power plant in the world and it is located to the southwest of Las Vegas producing an output of 392 megawatts of solar energy which is enough to power 140000 homes in the California area.

The energy produced is clean and thus the project removes around 400000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air each year, although the operating costs for the project are quite high and there are also reports of the installations causing the killing of a large number of local wildlife.

The project is spread over five miles in the Mojave Desert and it has three towers of 40 floors with 350000 mirrors surrounding them to focus the solar energy toward the boilers atop of the towers and thus create steam for the turbines. The cost for the energy generated is around four times the price of the conventional plants and it also requires more land to operate but the result is a cleaner source of energy.
