Located in Wellington, New Zealand, the Hataitai Home was designed by the practice of John Mills Architects in 2011 with an aesthetic that offers wonderful views of the surroundings that include the Evans Bay, Shelly Bay and the Tararua Mountain toward the north.
Spreading over a surface of 2630 square feet, the house is on a sloped terrain to the eastern flank of Mt Victoria and this allows a good outlook of the landscape through the living rooms and outdoor terraces. The owners asked for a complex series of private spaces that created a contrast to the clean shape of the exterior and with the natural finishes.
The focus was on comfort so the ambient temperature inside is around 20 degrees throughout the year and there is little need for thermal input thanks to the insulation and passive solar design elements. Since the surrounding buildings present a large diversity of architectural styles, the designers tried to create a structure that blends in with the hillside providing a balanced and highly functional home.
