Opened in 2009, the Donbass Arena stadium in Donetsk, Ukraine was designed by the practice of Arup Sport and it is the home of the FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
Located in the Lenin Comsomol park right in the center of the city, the project took more than three years to complete and its cost reached 400 million dollars. There were around 1600 specialists who were involved in its construction and the designers were the same ones who also designed the City of Manchester Stadium, the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Beijing National Stadium.
It has a capacity of 52518 persons and has a shape that is reminiscent of an UFO, but there are plenty of natural elements in its composition. The stadium has a natural grass pitch and its roof is made to slope towards the south so as to emulate the landscape and also profit from the natural light and ventilation.
On the exterior there is a glazed façade and during the nighttime it is entirely covered in lights to make it shine from afar. This stadium was the host of some of the matches during the Euro 2012 and will probably see plenty more important events during its life.
