Castelao Arena in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil was designed by the Vigliecca & Associados architectural practice in 2012, being the first stadium ready for the 2014 World Cup and the first arena in South America to receive a LEED Certification for its sustainable elements.

The designers remodeled the original space transforming it into a multipurpose arena with the unique feature of being able to integrate a part of the existing structure in the new one, making the space feel diverse and interesting even when there aren’t any events going on.

The parking lots were eliminated to leave room for a great plaza acting as an access hall to the stadium and also as an area where temporary installations can be exhibited, creating a connection with the landscape and its surroundings.

The designers wanted to continue the original 1970s project and bring it up to date rather than create a completely new structure and the stadium was enclosed with a translucent skin with the original columns still visible upon entrance.
