The Bill & Melinda Gates Hall is a part of the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, USA and it was designed by the practice of Morphosis Architects in 2014 to bring back to life an underutilized area near the Barton Hall and Hoy Field.
The exterior has stainless steel panels and a cantilevered canopy entrance to protect the outdoor plaza serving as a student social area with native plants and sculptural shapes. The classrooms are shaded by the steel skin and it creates a transformative surface designed with the digital modeling tools that defined the patterns, geometry and details.
The open layout centers on a glazed atrium toward the west which connects the entire programs together into a full height glass façade with skylights and informal study areas or collaborative spaces. The designers integrated sustainable features to decrease the energy consumption and to use the lake campus as a cooling source.
