The Baku Crystal Hall located in Azerbaijan was designed by the GMP Architekten practice with a faceted modular structure that took only eight months to design and construct.

The project was presented at the Inside Festival in Singapore and it had to be ready in time to host the Eurovision Song Contest from last year so the designers collaborated with the contractors Alpine Bau Deutschland and Nussli through the entire process to increase the overall speed and efficiency.

The hall is designed to be a concert hall as well as a sports stadium with 25000 seats and its structure is made from lightweight steel with a faceted membrane façade that is reminiscent of crystals. The original project was planned to be a temporary structure but during the construction it was altered to be more durable.

To quote the words of the designers: “A small change in the drawings and now it’s going to be there for 30-40 years.”
