This apartment block called Ter Huivra is located in the center of Joure, Friesland, The Netherlands and it was designed by the practice of Claus en Kaan Architecten as an atypical complex with patio homes as well as apartment spaces.
The first interesting element in the design is the amoeba-like aspect of the homes and apartment block which feature curving lines on the façade to integrate into the urban and natural surroundings. The shape is soft and it reflects the status of the region itself, since Joure is somewhere between a village and a town.
The predominant materials are glass and steel with white walls to make them stand out and ensure a brightly lit interior. There are parking facilities underground and overhanging floors with balcony railings to accentuate the continuity of the overall structure and its flowing shape.
The designers created a project which is reminiscent of the luxurious Mediterranean sailboats due to the continuous forms and railings.
