AC_CA held an interesting competition concerning a new Hong Kong Alternative Car Park Tower. Mozhao Studio came up with an interesting project for this competition, that allows a practical approach concerning the distribution of public spaces in accordance with the integration of the Hong Kong City Hall, the second floor pedestrian system etc.
The car park tower offers views of Victoria Harbor and Kowloon-and the best place to choose if you want to admire the surroundings is the top floor, of course. The tower also allows public access and it even has its own café and a multi functional area. Hong Kong encounters difficulties when it comes to parking lots, but this design from the people of Mozhao Studio increased the space reserved for cars, making the parking lot be pretty vacant during non work days.
The car routes are changed during non –work days and the parking space acts as a temporary market, linked to the Hong Kong City Hall. The flexibility and the multiple uses of this space offer many advantages, for example small business opportunities can arise for persons when the parking space functions as a market.
The parking lot is automated and its design seems uniform. Horizontal rails and spiral car lifts were used so that cars can be transported from the ground floor to any of the parking spots. The atrium is 80 meter high and it has a multi functional zone. This zone offers views of the sea and here people can wait before picking up their cars.
